All About Me

My Life As A Rookie Wife

Hey There!

My name is Charli, and from here on out I will be known as The Wife. On October 17th, 2010 I married the guy of my dreams. My “other half” and “partner in crime”, as I like to call him. His name is Gibran, but from this point on he will be known as The Man. He’s quite the catch.  He’s my best friend, my biggest cheerleader, and ultimately my rock. He likes to say that I’m the normal to his crazy too. We live in a cozy two-bedroom apartment in Bloomfield, NJ that we share with a completely spoiled rotten Yorkie named Karma (we named her that because she’s good sometimes, and bad others – get it?), who will from here on out be referred to as The Dog.

We consider ourselves a very healthy and happy young couple and very optimistic newlyweds. After dating for six years, we’ve got the whole love thing down solid, but it’s the marriage thing we’re working on perfecting — together, of course. Being a journalist and a writer by trade, I saw it only fitting to candidly document our journey into married life, and my quest to conquer “modern domestication” (whatever that is!) and my ups, downs, and turnarounds as a rookie wife. (As the former Online Managing Editor of TheKnot.com and WeddingChannel.com, I knew I’d be an expert at getting married, but had no clue what I was going to do after that.) Hence, this blog was born. I learn from all of my wins, losses, mistakes, triumphs, scrapes, and falls — and as I do, I’ll share them with you, promise.

I’ll have you know that I have my work cut out for me.  Honestly, I can’t really cook, I clean only because I have to, and I’m easily distracted. Qualities many married women have told me won’t always make me the best wife. We’ll see, won’t we? I think I’m a pretty awesome one for now — and I’m determined to never stop trying to make it work.

One thing I know for sure is that my husband loves me and I (really!) love him and we make each other so very happy. We’re pretty confident that’s all we’ll need to get by and the rest will come to us as we go.

Feel free to pop by every now and again to follow me on my journey, and don’t forget to say “hi”!

XOXO,

Charli Penn-Watkins

Best wishes! My huusband and I made it official on the 10th and have begun our happily ever after with our boxer Gunner. I too am not overly domestic, thus my search for some inspiring blogs.

Just stumbled on your blog today and what an absolutely adorable couple you are!

As someone who blogs about my marriage (in a lighthearted, funny way) I'm always excited to come across other marriage blogs.

Congrats on your "newlywed" status.. and may you have a lifetime of happy blog posts together! :-)

Thank you for another perspective on black love and marriage. My husband and I began a couples group in January 2011 to support marriage among our friends and their friends. We plan some sort of date night activity once a month. In the past year we have found it incredibly difficult to consistently retain couples. It gets discouraging at times, but, as I tell my husband, this is something I am passionate about and I believe it will get better.

Your blot is definitely going to be one of my pause place as we continue to press forward!
