4 Practically Free Ways to Celebrate Valentine’s Day Together

Share the Love

Our little guide to spending less and loving more this Valentine’s Day.

Make Each Other Cards
You could do what the corporate giants at Hallmark want you to, and go and buy each other six-dollar Valentine’s Day cards written from other people’s hearts. Or, you can unleash some creativity and open your heart and see what comes out. You don’t have to go the kindergarten route and make a glue, glitter, and construction paper mess – think outside the box. One year I made my husband a custom photo card, another I types a poem and framed it, and this year I’m planning to make a new card out of my favorite parts of the old ones he’s given me. Doesn’t matter how it looks as long as it comes from the heart.

Get Lost Together
For us, this one is an oldie but goodie. Hoping in the car armed with snacks and a navigational system for backup, when we first started dating one of our favorite things to do was just get lost together. A car ride with the right music and no destination can be just as romantic as any four course meal, promise. Get off early, get in your ride and just enjoy the open road and each other. Your destination doesn’t matter. Just be sure you know how to get back home by bedtime.

Go Camping In Your Living Room
Nope, I’m not kidding. Buy a bottle of your favorite wine and cook a meal to share or order your favorite takeout to start. Then, clear space in your living room or den, unplug your TV, phones, and gadgets, and light candles in place of a fire. Cuddle up close and let the memories happen. The conversation should flow and the romance will be instant. Some suggestions: Swap your favorite “remember that time” stories, tell ghost stories – whatever! – just be sure to keep those wine glasses filled.

Swap Material Gifts for Emotional Ones
This one is as easy as it is special. Devote the day to sharing the things you love most about your valentine. Why do they make you happy? What do you still love about them “after all this time”? Why can’t you live without them? What is it about them that makes you smile every time? Get where I’m going with this one? Just open your heart and let those emotional blessings pour out. Sometimes hearing how someone truly feels about us, even if it’s just a reminder, can be far more rewarding that opening a gift.

How do you celebrate your love on a budget?

These are great ways to show your loved one how much they mean to you. I tend to be the lovey-dovey one in my house, but my man comes around after awhile. I love baking dinner and a nice dessert for him and he usually pops up with a romantic card. Some men love pretending like it's no big deal, but underneath all that they are big teddy bears too.

These are all great ideas. Custom made trumps mass production any day. Over the years and as our family has grown we've celebrated Valentine's in a variety of ways. On the first Valentine's day after we were married the hubs gave me a beautiful necklace. It was very sweet but the most special gifts were the heartfelt cards he's given me. I still have every one.

I like the idea of "Go Camping In Your Living Room". While unplug the TV and hide the phone, I think it will definitely put more romance in the air if play some love songsat the background.
