Today was day four of the One Week to Better Sleep Challenge the man and I are participating in. If this were a class we’d be D-students! We’re failing horribly. As you know, the first night we were supposed to keep the room cool and dark and that was a total bust, though I tried. Well night we had to avoid alcohol, nicotine, and sugar before bed. The Man forgot completely and was sipping wine in bed watching the weather channel when I called him out, and I bought a brownie (my Achilles heel of food cravings) earlier that day that I’d forgotten all about and then decided I must have before bed. So, again we flunked the test.
Last night’s rule was to avoid snacking or heavy meals before bed. We didn’t do as badly at this. Our lovely new neighbors and dear friends Summer and Matt swung by and brought homemade vegetarian lasagna for dinner. We chowed down nice and early and I felt like success was imminent. Then I got too comfy and forgot about upholding the other rules altogether and instead found myself sipping a little pinot while I participated in the SITS Girls Comment Cocktail Hour Twitter party.
We’re such failures. Oh, the shame! It’s like we do everything else but sleep in our bed. We chat about our days, we laugh at late night TV, and we even make up silly nicknames for each other – like I said, everything but sleep. We’ve changed the entire function of our bed. It’s more like our couch than our resting place. Needless to say we haven’t experienced “better sleep” at all this week, but rest assured that we haven’t given up. We may be poor learners but we’re not dropping this class! Tonight’s challenge is to “relax right before bedtime” (yoga, soothing sounds, whatever!), and that’s something we certainly can do. I plan to sign off on the blogging nice and early, turn some Anita Baker on my iPod and zone out. Plus, The Man’s been face down asleep on the couch ever since I got home so from work so it’s probably safe to say that he’s relaxed. We’ll I’ll let you know if we get a passing grade on this one tomorrow. Goodnight!
